Keyboard Cat is our salvation (and the bane for politicians)

in your darkest day,
in your darkest hour,
when the fail is epic
and relentless
and no crisis can be bigger
do not despair —
keyboard cat will offer redemption.

Fatso, a.k.a. Keyboard Cat, has changed the way I look at failure. Sure, it hurts to make a mistake or show the world how much of a fool you are sometimes, but with Keyboard Cat around, you won’t hit rock bottom. You will be “played off” before you realise the extent of your failure, saving yourself from further humilation.

Keyboard Cat is the latest beloved Internet meme to dominate videos. By appending the Keyboard Cat clip (Fatso in a blue shirt playing the keyboard) to videos or virals showing a blooper or an epic fail, Keyboard Cat becomes the new symbol for “the old vaudeville hook” that will play you off the stage.

Keyboard Cat makes fun of human failures and delivers the right amount of silliness and taunting. What I also find interesting is its satirical and subversive potential. Politicans, beware. Sure, we’ll laugh when Keyboard Cat plays you off, but if you keep on committing blunders, comedy will turn into critique.  To borrow from Pablo Neruda’s famous reference to poetry in his remark to soldiers searching his home shortly after the coup led by Pinochet:

“Look around — there’s only one thing of danger for you here — Keyboard Cat.”
